HOW THE 20-WEEK SUPPORTED TRAINING PLANS WORK

CLEAR PHASES OF TRAINING, TAILORED TO YOU.

Train Smart, Run Stronger

Diagnostics

Week 0

You're only going to stick to a training plan which firstly fits your life, and secondly, which you enjoy.

The first thing we will do is send you a link to your athlete calendar and profile form.

Fill these in with as much detail as possible: not just how many times you want to train per week, any races booked, and club training sessions, but also, any days you can't run. Tell us about your PBs and paces, but also, your strengths and weaknesses, and what makes you tick as a runner.

This is all flexible and you can change at any time!

Testing

Week 1

You've given us the information: now, let's get some proof!

We'll set you some practice sessions to help us tailor your training zones and figure out how you respond to different training methods.

These sessions will be available on your training app, which links straight to your watch. We'll gather pace, heart rate, and other relevant data sets to inform the rest of the plan.

These tests are individual to you, but by now, you'll be a part of a supportive group, ready to share your successes (or swear at the coaches - also, fully encouraged!)

Training

Weeks 2-18

Time to get stuck in!

You'll receive your bespoke plan, comprising of 3-6 runs and 1-3 S&C sessions weekly.

But don't worry - you're not alone! We're just a message away for advice, and we'll regularly check in to review your progress. We'll make any necessary adjustments as we go, and offer feedback, analysis and support, keeping you on track.

Every 4 weeks, we will have a group call, tackling a training topic relevant to marathon training: running form, nutrition, recovery, and everyone's favourite: carb loading.

Taper & Race

Weeks 18/19-20

Training is done!

Now, all that's left is to taper, carb load, mobilise, consolidate, pre-hydrate, practice pacing, sort your kit... the taper can be the MOST confusing part.

We've got you!

You'll have a 1:1 call with Cat or Tom to plan out a bespoke 2-3 week taper, so that you know when to run, what to eat, and how to rest without feeling rusty.

And then, it's race day! We'll be tracking you all the way.

And yes, there is a party planned after!

But... how does it all work?!

What's included

Here's the specifics: everything you get for less than £10 per week!

Dedicated Training App

At the RunSpace, we use an app called Final Surge to deliver your runs AND strength training sessions. This links to all major sports watches and delivers your sessions, paces and intervals directly to your watch.

You check the sessions on the app, download them to your watch, and you'll be told how far and fast to run - and when to stop!

It syncs automatically and uploads immediately after you hit save, so we get all the data to clarify your next move.

3-6 runs per week

You select from 3-6 runs per week in our Athlete Profile form and we'll base your training around that.

However, this is flexible, and if you are able to run more or less on occasional weeks, just let us know and we can adjust things.

These runs will be based around you - your distances, your speeds, and your race. A typical week may contain a speed session or pacing run, a long run, and a recovery or easy run - however, if you want a more intense approach, we'll throw in some tempo, or if you're doing a hilly race, we'll add in regular hills!

If you are part of a social running group and want to incorporate that as one of your runs, just let us know, and we'll work that in too.

1-3 S&C sessions per week

Whether you're new to strength and conditioning and workout at home, or a pro gym user, we'll add 1-3 strength sessions on your plan which are running-specific and will help you run stronger for longer.

There is a direct correlation between running a strong second half of a marathon and doing running-specific strength and conditioning, so we'll make sure you can use your time wisely and maximise your training!

No equipment needed - we'll work around what you've got.

Your plan, your way.

You choose between 3-5 runs per week and 1-3 strength sessions per week. But this can change!

Within the app, it is simple reschedule your own sessions: you just drag and drop them to different days!

If you need more larger-scale changes to your plan, because your fitness has increased, your goals have changed, or wider life circumstances has altered your playing field, just let us know - we'll have a chat and adjust your plan to suit.

Online community

At the RunSpace we pride ourselves on community. You'll be part of a group of duck-loving runners, who are ready to support you towards your next PB or goal event... with some prizes on offer along the way!

The website and WhatsApp group is buzzing with questions from gel recipes and shoes recommends, to silly strava segment names. Whether it's some lighthearted fun after a Need shoe recommends or Hive Mind advice? Ask away. Want to offer support for others, in order to inspire yourself? Give a shout out. See a cute duck on a run? You bet we want to see pictures! 🦆

We'll have a group call every month on a topic concerning marathon training, and you'll get the opportunity to book in for an extra 1:1 call towards the end of your training block as well, in order to plan out your taper and race strategy.

This is of course in addition to having direct access to both coaches via the app, at any time.

End-of-season event - bonus!

Online group calls are great, but let's face it: we want to SEE those medals!

So when everyone is done their spring marathons, we'll have a parkrun party (when you've recovered). Parkrun (wearing your medals, of course), and then a big group meal out... where we can all chat about our next running goals, too!

Frequently Asked Questions

What do we mean by 'supported training plan'?

A supported training plan is a fully individualised, bespoke training plan. It is based towards your specific goals, ascertained via your athlete profile form and on recent running habits and performance. These have been interpreted and the plan then written by a HUMAN Running Coach, Cat!

The support element bridges the gap between full 1:1 coaching and a typical online training plan. We'll be in frequent contact with you when we create the training plan in week 0-1, and then we'll check in with you for analysis, feedback and adjustments on weeks 5, 10, and 15. Then on week 18/19 (depending on whether you want a 2 or 3 week taper, which we can ascertain at the start, or as we go), you'll have a call with either Cat or Tom to plan out your individualised taper.

And if you need us in between these weeks, you have a direct line to message either of us at any point.

All this involves real life, empathetic human accountability, and professional coach feedback: no AI-generated nonsense! We look into the metrics which matter and tell you how you can improve.

And most importantly, the supported element also comes through a thriving running community who will cheer you on towards those PBs: the support isn't just from the coaches, it's from your peers, too.

We’re ready when you are!

What marathons can this apply to?

Any marathon - trail, road or mixed terrain!

As long as it's more than 20 weeks away, we've got you.

Who is this for?

The RunSpace is a place for any runner, seasoned or brand new to it, who wants an individualised plan.

We coach athletes in their 80s who have run all their lives, and people in their 20s just starting out. We have athletes who have switched from a gym focus alongside seasoned trail runners. Within the wider RunSpace community, the majority of runners who we coach are tackling road races from 5km-Marathon, but we have specialised programmes for Military fitness tests, Hyrox athletes and those who do multi-day ultras.

And any pace is welcome! We have sub-3 marathoners to those just trying to make the 8-hour London Marathon cut-off! As long as you are willing to train, challenge yourself, and communicate when you need us, you're very welcome on board.

We're proud to have athletes from far and wide all over the globe, so at the RunSpace, you will find a common thread of people who want to improve their running.

Who will I be coached by?

You will be coached by Cat, founder of the RunSpace, professional biomechanics coach and Running Personal Trainer of 6 years, Army PTI and passionate 5-10km runner.

Alongside Cat we have recent RunSpace recruit, Tom, who brings an endurance specific focus on-board. Although he DOES join us from the dark side, as an ex-competitive cyclist together we have all the tools to help you achieve your next goal!

And sometimes, felines Kipchoge, Mo (Farah) and Jesse (Owens) will join for the video calls... yes, yes you CAN say that you have been coached by Kipchoge!

What makes this different from other coaching programmes/apps?

The RunSpace is proudly not AI integrated. AI is not something we find works for coaching; it is missing the human energy and empathy required to be effective.

Knowing when to push and when to rest, breaking down realistic goals and the pathways to them, and making sure that training fits your lifestyle are factors often not considered by other training methods. Plus what training app would give you duck memes! 🦆🤪

Supported Training plans are an affordable alternative which gives personalisation to your plan without the costs of 1:1, and with the benefits of a community and a hive mind so you never feel like you're missing out.

Human coaching, human feedback and human empathy.

I train with a club, is that okay?

Absolutely - we do understand the importance and benefits of communal training for many people. We will work to incorporate your club sessions as best as we can!

We won't give feedback for sessions we have not set, and we'll measure expectations if we think that excessive social running is diluting your training focus.

However, we aim to give you the best of both worlds. Balance is key.

Do I need to have done a marathon before?

TL:DR; Nope.

We have coached people to their first races and parkruns all the way up to completion of numerous ultras. The only prerequisites are a willingness to learn and a desire to train intelligently.

We test all athletes at the start, to set the benchmarks and make sure that we are on the same footing with expectations and terminology.

With so much information out there it is important to set out the basics for all so that both athlete and coach know what is expected.

However, if you want to RUN the whole marathon, you should be able to run 6 miles continuously on day 1 of the training programme.

If you can't yet run 6 miles, that's ok - but we may need to approach the marathon with a run-walk strategy. And that is also ok!

How flexible are the training plans?

Scheduling is completely up to you.

Some people work strange shift patterns or can only train at short notice. Our app allows you to drag and drop sessions on the fly so that you can shuffle your training to suit.

What if I don't like the plan?

Talk to us: we will work out WHY and adjust it!

No refunds are available after the plan has commenced.

Is it available any cheaper?

I appreciate that this plan is a bit of an investment: but so is great quality training.

For less than £10 per week, you're getting all of the quality of 1:1 training, condensed into a 20-week training block.

You'll also learn skills and systems which you can take beyond the marathon and apply to your training for any distance! We don't just tell you what to do, we'll tell you WHY you're doing it.

For less than £10 a week, you're going to be a stronger runner for life. And, at the end of your training, you'll have the option to upgrade to 1:1 or Club Coaching at a massively discounted rate!

I've signed up - what happens now?

You'll now be emailed next steps: a link to join the website, a link to download the app and complete your athlete calendar, and a link to complete your athlete form. You'll also get a link to the whatsapp group.

Please complete your athlete calendar before you fill in the athlete profile form! There are video guides to make this super simple.

We'll then be able to set up your training! Your training will be good to go from 20 weeks before your marathon date - we'll message you on our app to confirm when it's all up and ready for you (usually, the week before your training commences).

And then, we're good to go!
